Avery Labels was founded by R. Stanton Avery in 1935. His mission was to make labels that were easy to remove and left no residue behind. The self-adhesive label was born.
The goal of Stan's self-adhesive labels was to make it easier for businesses, stores and product owners to merchandise their products and identify their things.
Early on, Stan and team developed coater and die cutting machines using parts from sewing machines and washing machines to assist in its automation.
5 years after Stan's idea of turning gummed labels into Self-Adhesive labels, Stan and his team proudly pose in front of their manufacturing facility in California
In 1946, Avery Adhesives, a partnership of Stan and Dorothy Avery, became Avery Adhesives Label Corporation. They sold labels to re-sellers, direct-to-industry and converted labels as well.
The assortment of available products continually expanded. Including things like price stickers, key markers and HELLO My Name Is Badges. Avery took full advantage of people's desire to organize using his new self-adhesive labels.
With growth came the need for more space. In 1948, Avery moved to a new plant in Monrovia, California.
