What is GHS

GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. It was developed by the United Nations, and its goal is to standardize and harmonize the classification and labelling of chemicals to give universally understood warnings to users. The three major areas of impact are:

  • Hazard Classification: Definitions of hazards now include specific criteria for classifying health and physical hazards as well as classification of mixtures. It will result in more accurate safety data sheets.
  • Labels:Chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors must use labels that include a harmonized signal word, pictograms and hazard statement for each hazard class and category. Precautionary statements must also be provided.
  • Safety Data Sheets:Now have a specific 16-section standardized format.
