Product labels are a vital part of the shopping experience for many Canadians. This is particularly true when it comes to shopping for food. With many households accommodating special diets, lifestyle choices, allergies, and restrictions, the information presented on food labels needs to be clear, concise, easy to locate, and complete.

What to Consider When Designing Product Labels

A product label’s layout is equally important as the information presented. While it is important to design a label layout that is interesting and catches the eye, it is also important to ensure that the design highlights vital information rather than hiding it.  This can greatly affect a shopper’s ability to read the label and make an informed decision.

The 3 Ls of Food Label Design:

  1. Location

Provide shoppers with at-a-glance convenience by placing vital information in convenient areas on your product’s label. This includes details like ingredients, nutrition, and manufacturing location.

Make it easy for shoppers to locate the information they seek without having to linger in the aisles in search of it.

  1. Legibility

Ensure that the information on product labels is easy to read. Font size, style, colour and placement can all contribute to the legibility of your label’s information.

When considering these details, it is a good idea to show mockups and designs to people in different age groups and with different vision capabilities. For example, an older person or someone who requires glasses may not be as comfortable with a small, white font on a black background.

  1. Language

Make it easy for shoppers to understand what you are saying by presenting the information on your food label in commonly used terms. Most shoppers want honesty and transparency when it comes to the labels on their food.
